Old Saxon masculine i-stem nounnot directly recoverable5 stagesLIVE DOSSIER

heti

Old Saxon heti is an attested noun, not a reconstructed Proto-Germanic form. Köbler prints the normalized citation form hėti* with a trailing asterisk, then gives three cited lexical loci whose inflections produce five witness readings: accusative singular heti at Heliand 1322 in manuscripts M, C, and V; dative singular heti at Genesis 60; and genitive singular hetias in the tenth-century Saxon Confession. No nominative singular appears in that inventory, but the exact surface heti is visibly written in Munich Cgm 25. The directly inspected Heliand line places the noun in the Beatitudes, where righteous people endure rîkioro manno heti endi harmquidi, powerful men's hostility or persecution and hostile speech. The Saxon Confession instead places hetias beside malice, envy, and slander among confessed wrongs. Those contexts establish a range broader than one private feeling without proving that persecution was the prehistoric root meaning. Fulk and Köbler analyze the Old Saxon comparison as an i-stem; Pfeifer describes the wider Germanic noun as an old es/os-stem, so the inherited morphological account remains public rather than falsely harmonized.

ROOT REVEAL
“The token is attested even though the dictionary headword wears an asterisk. Köbler's hėti* is a starred normalized citation form over written heti and hetias, and its count of three expands to five witness readings because one Heliand locus survives in three manuscripts.”

REVEALING ROOT · Proto-Indo-European*ghos-ti-

stranger, guest, host; a person inside reciprocal duties

* RECONSTRUCTED
TRANSFORMATION

*ghos-ti- → hostis ‘stranger; enemy’ → hostīlis → hostile

WHY IT UNVEILS

A stranger became both guest and enemy.

Hospitality and hostility preserve a semantic fork in how the outsider is received.

* RECONSTRUCTED
TRANSFORMATION

*deru- ‘firm’ → *treuwaz ‘faithful’ → trēowþ ‘fidelity’ → truth

REVEALING ROOT · Czechrobota

compulsory labor, corvée, drudgery

● ATTESTED
TRANSFORMATION

robota ‘forced labor’ → artificial worker → robot

WHY IT UNVEILS

Robot named forced labor before machinery.

The word inherits a social role—labor under compulsion—before it acquires a technical body.

REVEALING ROOT · Latinhumus

earth, soil, ground

● ATTESTED
TRANSFORMATION

humus ‘ground’ → humilis ‘low’ → humilitās ‘lowness’ → humility

A physical position became a social condition and then a moral virtue.

REVEALING ROOT · Latincalculus

small pebble; counting-board stone

● ATTESTED
TRANSFORMATION

calculus ‘pebble’ → calculāre ‘reckon’ → calculate

WHY IT UNVEILS

Calculation began with a pebble in the hand.

The root turns abstraction back into the physical counting technology it fossilized.

ball, sphere, or ball of thread

● ATTESTED
TRANSFORMATION

cliewen → clew ‘thread ball’ → guiding thread → clue ‘evidence’

ignorant; not knowing

● ATTESTED
TRANSFORMATION

nescius ‘ignorant’ → ‘foolish’ → ‘fastidious / precise’ → ‘pleasant’
