CLAIMS & DISPUTES
SCHOLARLY DISPUTES / 9
Did English borrow candor only through French?
French candeur is a published route, while Merriam-Webster describes the English borrowing as French and Latin. Direct learned Latin influence therefore remains visible.
Did Dutch mossel reshape the spelling mussel?
Dutch mossel may have influenced the current English spelling.
Was algorithm the original form and algorism a corruption?
No. Algorism is older. Algorithm is the later altered form, with its th commonly explained through Greek arithmos or arithmetic influence.
Is algorithm originally a Greek mathematical word?
No. The lexical line reaches the Arabic name al-Khwārizmī through Medieval Latin. Greek arithmos likely influenced the later spelling, but it is not the source of the name.
Are arithmetic and algorithm cognates?
No. Arithmetic descends through Greek arithmos “number.” Algorithm descends from al-Khwārizmī's name; arithmos influenced the later spelling rather than supplying the ancestor.
Is clue borrowed from Greek?
No. Greek myth influenced the English word’s meaning; the word itself is inherited from Old English.
Was female formed by adding fe- to male?
No. Female continues Latin fēmella through French; male only influenced its later English spelling.
Do male and female share one historical root?
No. They have different Latin ancestries. Their modern visual pairing comes partly from male reshaping female’s English spelling.
Is realm simply a shortened form of royal?
No. Realm descends through a government noun from Latin regimen, but its medieval form was altered under the influence of the royal adjective.
CONTRARIAN TRUTHS / 2
Arithmetic put the “ithm” into algorithm without becoming its ancestor.
Arithmetic carries Greek arithmos “number.” Algorithm carries al-Khwārizmī's name; arithmos influenced its spelling, not its genealogy.
Royal reshaped realm.
Realm follows Latin regimen, government, through Old French reiame; American Heritage reports that its medieval form was altered under the influence of Old French reial, royal.
