WHERE INTERPRETATION IS TESTED
CLAIMS & DISPUTES
SCHOLARLY DISPUTES / 6
Was emotion first used in the 1570s or exactly 1579?
Etymonline gives the decade; Merriam-Webster gives 1579. These are compatible levels of precision, not proof of one first utterance.
Does etymologize begin in 1532 or the 1530s?
The reports are compatible at different precision: Merriam-Webster gives 1532 and Etymonline gives the 1530s.
Do the fixed formulas prove the entire prehistoric derivation by themselves?
No. They are daughter-language evidence compatible with participial history; the Proto-Germanic formation is established comparatively across branches.
Is the immediate Latin source a participle or a verb stem?
Merriam-Webster names Late Latin humiliatus, the past participle of humiliare; American Heritage summarizes Late Latin humiliāre, humiliāt-. These are compatible levels of the same formation, not evidence for two unrelated ancestries.
Does every Heliand context simply mean hate?
No. The located contexts concern hostile minds, hostile intent, and a ruler becoming hostile or enraged in mind. Those are compatible with hostility but do not force the modern noun hate into every token.
Does Bīrūnī prove tea was already a common Persian drink in the 11th century?
No. The report proves learned awareness and discussion of use in China and Tibet; Iranica says this does not establish broad Persian consumption at that time.

Matching text only locates a record. It does not raise confidence, settle a dispute, establish cognacy, or turn a source report into direct inspection. Follow the result into its citations and editorial limits.
