CLAIMS & DISPUTES

SCHOLARLY DISPUTES / 9

openprobableposition text

Does the root prove that reading is “gathering letters”?

No. Latin legere covers gathering, selecting, and reading, but the precise semantic steps cannot be recovered from a slogan alone.

resolvedestablishedposition text

Does emotion etymologically mean “energy in motion”?

No. That slogan is a modern folk segmentation. The documented route is French émotion through emouvoir / esmovoir to Latin ex- plus movēre, literally a movement-out or stirring family.

resolvedestablishedposition text

Must an etymon be the deepest reconstructable root?

No. Merriam-Webster defines it as an earlier same-language or ancestral form, a foreign loan source, or a word or morpheme used in composition or derivation.

resolvedestablishedposition text

Does friend literally mean free in modern English?

No. Historical relationship is not synchronic definition. OED gives friend its own extensive noun senses, while the Germanic base links the histories.

resolvedestablishedposition text

Was pursue the securely recovered basic meaning of the root?

No. A daughter-language gloss range cannot establish one Proto-Germanic or Proto-Indo-European basic meaning, and the broader reviewed comparison explicitly remains semantically opaque.

resolvedprobableposition text

Does intellect literally mean “choosing between”?

The morphology of intellegere is traditionally analyzed through inter- and legere, and selection informs the semantic history. That slogan is not a complete theory of cognition.

resolvedestablishedposition text

Did right begin only as a moral judgment?

No. The reviewed history joins straight, correct, just, proper, and directional senses inside one inherited family.

resolvedestablishedposition text

Does modern vriend literally mean someone currently loving?

No. Historical morphology and current lexical meaning are different layers.

resolvedestablishedposition text

Does κῆδος have one simple English definition?

No. LSJ separates care or concern, anxiety and grief, troubles, funeral rites and mourning, an object of care, and connection by marriage.

The Old English friend was a loving-agent noun—but not merely a modern intimate.

OED and Bosworth–Toller preserve the morphology behind frēond: an inherited nd-stem formation tied to the verb meaning free or love. The same sources then refuse a slogan-sized definition. Old English uses cover close companion, ally or non-enemy, relation, friend of God, friend versus foe, and friends acting as arbitrators. Cotton MS Vitellius A XV folio 152r visibly preserves freondum in a hall filled with favored people at Beowulf 1018. The unveiling is not that friend secretly means love in every sentence; it is that a loving-agent fossil became a socially versatile noun before modern English existed.
