English word origin

Etymology of bank

The financial institution preserves the name of a trading counter. A river bank and a bank of equipment require separate histories; a shared spelling is not a single lineage.

One spelling, several historical routes

The institution was named through the counter

For the financial word, Merriam-Webster gives Middle French banque or Old Italian banca as the immediate source, with banca denoting a bench. Its explanatory note connects the money changer's counter with the business conducted there and then the institution. This is a place-and-activity association, not a hidden definition of finance. It also matters that the dictionary allows alternative immediate routes: an interface should not silently replace French-or-Italian with one certain borrowing event.

Merriam-Webster: bank

A cross-language check, not an English birth certificate

The Trésor de la langue française, published online by ATILF/CNRS, treats French banque as borrowed from Italian banca. It distinguishes the table or sales-counter use of the Italian word from its credit-institution use. That corroborates the commercial setting on the French side, but its French quotation dates cannot date an English borrowing. Comparing dictionaries is most useful when each record retains the language, sense, and historical claim it actually documents.

ATILF/CNRS, Trésor de la langue française: banque

Do not put the river under the money changer

Merriam-Webster separates the raised-ground noun from the financial noun. It calls the former probably Scandinavian and compares Old Norse bakki. It also gives the row-or-tier noun a route through Anglo-French banc. These histories have Germanic connections, but they are not permission to place river, counter, and equipment rack in a chain of successive meanings. Some links are ancestry, others comparison, and the uncertainty attached to the Scandinavian route must remain visible.

Merriam-Webster: bank

Why a blood bank is a revealing extension

The French historical entry identifies banque du sang as probably modelled on English blood bank. Here the revealing development is the transfer of a storage-and-availability idea into a new field, not the discovery of money inside blood. This comparison suggests a practical reading rule: ask what feature a new use selects from an older one. A modern bank can be an institution, reserve, or repository without its users mentally picturing a bench; current meaning is not confined to the earliest concrete object.

ATILF/CNRS, Trésor de la langue française: banque

What this does not establish

  • Source-cited editorial analysis, not an independently reviewed SET-U ancestry claim.
  • The competing immediate routes into English and the probable Scandinavian origin are not adjudicated here.
  • No claim that homographs are wholly unrelated at every reconstructed depth; this report separates their documented English routes.
  • No precise prehistoric root, sound law, or single inventor of the financial term is established.

Where this record stops

This page does not supply an independently verified sound-change sequence, first-use manuscript or complete family tree unless a cited analysis explicitly establishes one. Missing detail here is a limit of this record—not a claim that humanity knows nothing more.

An older meaning does not determine what a word must mean today. Follow the sources, preserve disagreements, and keep ancestry separate from interpretation.
