Is hotel directly shortened from hospital?
No. Hotel and hospital are doublets: both reach Latin hospitāle, but hotel comes through French hôtel and Old French hostel while hospital comes through Anglo-French hospital.
When did hotel enter English?
Merriam-Webster reports 1687 for the lodging noun, after French hôtel had developed from Old French hostel.
Is hostel a shortened modern form of hotel?
No. Hostel is the historically older-looking English doublet. Both words descend by different French histories from Latin hospitāle.
CONTRARIAN TRUTHS / 2
Hotel and hospital are siblings, not parent and child.
French hôtel continues Old French hostel, while hospital follows a related learned route through the same Latin guest-accommodation family. English hotel is not simply a shortening of English hospital.
Hostel is older than the modern hotel story.
Hostel, hotel, and hospital are doublets from Latin guest lodging. Hostel preserves the older-looking French form; it is not a recent clipping of hotel.
