Variant of Ena ( “ female given name ” ) . The ultimate origin is therefore uncertain, since several etymologies have been proposed for Ena .
One possibility derives the name through Irish Eithne ( “ female given name ” ) , from Middle Irish Eithne , from Old Irish Eithne . The name has traditionally been associated with Irish eithne ( “ kernel ” ) , from Middle Irish eitne ( “ grain, kernel ” ) , ultimately from * h₁ét(e)no- ( “ kernel ” ) .
A second possibility is that Ena originated as a short form of female given names ending in -ena or -ene .
