Borrowed from English Titania , the name of the fairy queen in William Shakespeare 's A Midsummer Night's Dream . Shakespeare took the name from Latin tītānia , the feminine of tītānius ( “ of or pertaining to the Titans ” ) , from Tītān ( “ Titan ” ) . In Ovid 's works, the Latin form was used as an epithet for female descendants of the Titans, including Diana.
The moon of Uranus was discovered by William Herschel in 1787 and was named after Shakespeare's Titania. The asteroid 593 Titania was likewise named after the Shakespearean character.

First attested in 1898 as part of the company name Aktieselskabet Sogndal Titaniajerngruber . Named with reference to titanjernstein ( “ ilmenite, titanium iron ore ” ) , the titanium-bearing ore mined by the company, and thus ultimately related to titan ( “ titanium ” ) . The company was formally registered as Aktieselskabet Titania in 1902 and has been known as Titania AS since 1927.
