Source etymology 2

Original entry ↗
noun

Abbreviation of tally stick. · One of two books, sheets of paper, etc., on which corresponding accounts were kept. · Any account or score kept by notches or marks, whether on wood or paper, or in a book, especially one kept in duplicate. · One thing made to suit another; a counterpart or match.

Selected source glosses provide context, not a complete modern definition inventory

From Middle English talie, from Anglo-Norman tallie and Old French taille (“notch in a piece of wood signifying a debt”), from Medieval Latin tallia, from Latin talea (“a cutting, rod, stick”). Doublet of taille and talea. The same root word also appears in Swedish talja, Danish talje (“tally”), which are related to Old East Norse tælgia (“to carve”), which may be related to the English term (compare score, to Old Norse skor (“notch”)). Also compare Proto-Germanic *talą (“number”).

Where this record stops

This page does not supply an independently verified sound-change sequence, first-use manuscript or complete family tree unless a cited analysis explicitly establishes one. Missing detail here is a limit of this record—not a claim that humanity knows nothing more.

An older meaning does not determine what a word must mean today. Follow the sources, preserve disagreements, and keep ancestry separate from interpretation.
