Source etymology 2

Original entry ↗
noun

A serving boy; a youth attending a person of high degree, especially at courts, often as a position of honor and education. · A youth employed for doing errands, waiting on the door, and similar service in households. · A boy or girl employed to wait upon the members of a legislative body. · An employee whose main purpose is to replace materials that have either been checked out or otherwise moved, back to their shelves.

verb

To attend (someone) as a page. · To call or summon (someone). · To contact (someone) by means of a pager or other mobile device. · To call (somebody) using a public address system to find them.

Selected source glosses provide context, not a complete modern definition inventory

From Old French page, possibly via Italian paggio, from Medieval Latin pagius (“servant”), probably from Ancient Greek παιδίον (paidíon, “boy, lad”), from παῖς (paîs, “child”); some sources consider this unlikely and suggest instead Latin pagus (“countryside”), in sense of "boy from the rural regions". Used in English from the 13th century onwards.

Where this record stops

This page does not supply an independently verified sound-change sequence, first-use manuscript or complete family tree unless a cited analysis explicitly establishes one. Missing detail here is a limit of this record—not a claim that humanity knows nothing more.

An older meaning does not determine what a word must mean today. Follow the sources, preserve disagreements, and keep ancestry separate from interpretation.
