From Middle English poete, from Old French poete, from Latin poēta (“poet, author”), from Ancient Greek ποιητής (poiētḗs, “creator, maker, author, poet”), from ποιέω (poiéō, “to make, compose”). Displaced native Old English sċop and lēoþwyrhta (literally, "leedwright" or "poem-writer"). Doublet of piyyut.
