Source etymology 2

Original entry ↗
noun

A neap tide.

verb

To trap (a ship) in water too shallow to move, due to the smaller tidal range occurring in a period of neap tides. · To ooze, to sink, to subside, to tail.

adj

Low; lowest; the ebb or lowest point of a tide. · Designating a tide which occurs just after the first and third quarters of the moon, when there is the least difference between high tide and low tide.

Selected source glosses provide context, not a complete modern definition inventory

From Middle English neep, from Old English nēp (“scant, lacking”), possibly from Proto-Germanic *nōpiz (“narrow”). Found especially in Old English nēpflōd (“neap tide”, literally “low tide”). Compare Norwegian dialectal nøpen (“scarce, scant, barely enough”).

Where this record stops

This page does not supply an independently verified sound-change sequence, first-use manuscript or complete family tree unless a cited analysis explicitly establishes one. Missing detail here is a limit of this record—not a claim that humanity knows nothing more.

An older meaning does not determine what a word must mean today. Follow the sources, preserve disagreements, and keep ancestry separate from interpretation.
