Source etymology 3

Original entry ↗
noun

A non-SI unit of pressure equal to 100,000 pascals, i.e. a megadyne per square centimetre. · A dyne per square centimetre, i.e. a microbar in the modern sense.

Selected source glosses provide context, not a complete modern definition inventory

Borrowed from Ancient Greek βάρος (báros, “weight”), as a variant of earlier barye and barad. First attested as sense 2 by suggestion of Theodore William Richards in 1903, while sense 1 was proposed by Vilhelm Bjerknes, who first published about it in 1906 as German Bar, see there for more.

Where this record stops

This page does not supply an independently verified sound-change sequence, first-use manuscript or complete family tree unless a cited analysis explicitly establishes one. Missing detail here is a limit of this record—not a claim that humanity knows nothing more.

An older meaning does not determine what a word must mean today. Follow the sources, preserve disagreements, and keep ancestry separate from interpretation.
