Unnumbered source etymology
Original entry ↗To make into or become an adverb.
A word that modifies a verb, adjective, other adverbs, or various other types of words, phrases, or clauses. · In the Raku programming language, a named parameter that modifies the behavior of a routine.
Borrowed from French adverbe, from Latin adverbium, from ad- (“to”) + verb(um) (“word, verb”) + -ium, so called because it is used to supplement other words (not specifically verbs). By surface analysis, ad- + verb.
