Selected source glosses provide context, not a complete modern definition inventory

From pie + r + -ex. First manufactured by the Corning Glassware Factory in 1915. * 1957, Letter from the Corning Glassware Factory: *: "We had a number of prior trademarks ending in the letters ex. One of the first commercial products to be sold under the new mark was a pie plate, and in the interests of euphonism the letter "r" was inserted between pie and ex, and the whole thing condensed to pyrex." * By surface analysis, the name also suggests pyr- (“fire”) + rex (“king”), thus connoting superior performance at high temperatures; in this regard, compare also the name of a major competing brand, Fire-King. Corning itself has acknowledged that this surface analysis has been noticed by many people but maintains that it was not in fact the way that the name was coined. However, this surface analysis has salutary effects for a brand name because it inevitably has influenced the positive connotations of the name for many customers who were unaware of the true etymology.

Where this record stops

This page does not supply an independently verified sound-change sequence, first-use manuscript or complete family tree unless a cited analysis explicitly establishes one. Missing detail here is a limit of this record—not a claim that humanity knows nothing more.

An older meaning does not determine what a word must mean today. Follow the sources, preserve disagreements, and keep ancestry separate from interpretation.
