Unnumbered source etymology
Original entry ↗Alternative letter-case form of sidhe (“fairy”)
A race of supernatural beings found in Gaelic folklore, analogous to fairies or elves.
From Irish sídhe, older form of sí (“fairy mound”). That sense is found in English only as sidhe. The sense “fairies”, an ellipsis of aos sídhe (“people of the fairy mound”), is not found in Irish.
