Source etymology 1
Original entry ↗A member of a Native American people who traditionally live in the central and eastern Sierra Nevada, the Mono Basin, and adjacent areas of the Great Basin in California. · A Mono wind.
The Numic language of the Mono people of California. · A county in California, United States, see Mono County. · An alkaline desert lake (Mono Lake) in this county, having a unique ecosystem.
Uncertain. The Monache, a related ethnic group, seem to derive their name from the same common source as the Mono, as -chi occurs otherwise in the Yokutsan and Miwok languages as a relatively common suffix on tribal names.
