Source etymology 2

Original entry ↗
suffix

Used to form the second-person singular present tense and past tense of verbs. (if thou is the subject; not used with you)

Selected source glosses provide context, not a complete modern definition inventory

Etymology tree Proto-Indo-European *-eh₂yési Proto-Germanic *-ōsi Proto-West Germanic *-ōs Old English -ast Middle English -est English -est From Middle English -est, -st, from Old English -est, -ast, -st, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *-zi, from Proto-Indo-European *-si. The -t was by transfer from inverted order where thou followed the verb, which also occurred in most dialects of Middle Dutch and Middle High German (compare modern German -st).

Where this record stops

This page does not supply an independently verified sound-change sequence, first-use manuscript or complete family tree unless a cited analysis explicitly establishes one. Missing detail here is a limit of this record—not a claim that humanity knows nothing more.

An older meaning does not determine what a word must mean today. Follow the sources, preserve disagreements, and keep ancestry separate from interpretation.
